In August of 2018, Thunberg made a decisive move. The school was shut down, she displayed a banner reading "School Strike For Climate", and sat quietly outside of Sweden's parliament. She believed that this would draw the attention of politicians and prompt them to take action to stop the global warming. Swedish media captured Thunbergs protest and word became known. Shortly thereafter thousands of students from around the globe joined her #FridaysforFuture strikes skipping school on Fridays in protest of the effects of climate change. Climate activists all over the world took part in the Global Strike for Climate. The Global Strike for Climate was a huge success. Over 1.6 million people participated in 125 countries.
